Parks and Recreation

The City of Vallejo manages its parks and public spaces through a coordinated effort led by its Public Works Department. Public Works is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the city-owned parks, trails, waterfront areas, and open spaces that community members enjoy every day. This includes everything from long‑term planning and construction oversight to the daily upkeep of landscapes, restrooms, lighting, signage, and recreational infrastructure. The department’s administrative and engineering teams guide policy, budgeting, environmental compliance, and capital improvement projects, while the maintenance division ensures these spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for all.

Working alongside the City—but operating independently—is the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD), a special district established in 1944 to provide recreation services, programming, and facility management for the community. GVRD oversees a wide array of parks and facilities, including neighborhood parks, community centers, sports fields, playgrounds, and an Olympic-size pool. The district is funded through a combination of local revenue, program fees, grants, and park dedication funds, allowing it to offer year-round classes, youth and adult sports, after-school programs, community events, and outdoor activities. Governed by a five-member board, GVRD serves more than 120,000 residents annually and plays a vital role in supporting healthy, active lifestyles across Vallejo.

Although the City and GVRD operate as separate agencies, their partnership is essential to Vallejo’s park system. Many parks and facilities are owned by the City but leased to GVRD, allowing each organization to focus on its strengths. Public Works handles the structural backbone; planning, construction, and maintenance.  While GVRD brings each site to life through programming, recreation services, and community engagement. This collaboration also extends to shared funding opportunities, such as participatory budgeting initiatives that support improvements across multiple sites. By working together, the City and GVRD ensure that Vallejo residents and visitors have access to well-maintained parks, vibrant recreational offerings, and safe, enjoyable public spaces throughout the community.
