Household Hazardous Waste

Many products used in everyday life contain potentially hazardous materials that require special attention and care when disposed of. Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes any material that can pose a serious risk to people, wildlife, or the environment if improperly disposed of. It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage or down the drain.

Hazardous waste may be toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive.  Whenever possible, residents are encouraged to choose non-toxic alternatives.

Residents may dispose of up to 125 pounds or 15 gallons of unusable household hazardous waste per trip at the Napa-Vallejo Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, free of charge.

Recology Vallejo also accepts limited quantities of the following items for free drop-off at 2021 Broadway Street:

  • Antifreeze
  • Cooking and motor oil
  • Drained used oil filters
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Household and car batteries
  • Paints
  • Sharps
ELECTRONIC WASTE (E-WASTE)

Before tossing out your electronic device (anything with a plug, cable, or battery), consider donating or selling items that are still usable or repairable. If an item cannot be repaired, it should be properly recycled.

Examples of electronic waste: Microwaves and other small household appliances, televisions, computer monitors and towers, cell phones, DVD players, printers, hair dryers, and more.

IMPORTANT: Electronic and universal waste, such as fluorescent tubes and consumer batteries, are prohibited from the trash. These items contain a variety of hazardous components like lead, cadmium and mercury, arsenic, and flame retardants. When dumped in a landfill, these materials can contaminate the soil and ground water, harming the environment and surrounding communities.

The City of Vallejo has several options available for residents looking to recycle their e-waste responsibly.

WHERE TO DROP OFF E-WASTE
You can drop off electronic items at the Recology Vallejo Materials Recycling Facility located at 2021 Broadway Street. Drop-off hours are 8AM-3:30PM, Thursday-Saturday. No appointments are necessary. Residents must be able to unload the materials they bring in. Visit Recology Vallejo's Electronic & Universal Waste page for a list of accepted items.

Visit CalRecycle's E-Waste Drop-off Locator for additional drop-off sites and organizations that recover unwanted electronics in your area.

You may also drop off select items to the original manufacturer:

MEDICATION & SHARPS DISPOSAL

Proper disposal of unused prescription medications and other pharmaceutical waste helps prevent these items from ending up in the hands of children, on the streets, or in local waterways.

Ask your pharmacist whether they offer take-back services.

Several Costco and Kaiser pharmacies sell pre-addressed, prepaid mailers that allow customers to send unwanted medications to a certified disposal facility. Free medication take-back boxes are available at the Kaiser Vallejo 24-hour pharmacy located at 975 Sereno Drive.

PAINT

There are many convenient ways to recycle paint through California’s Paint Stewardship Program. Since its launch in 2012, PaintCare has established over 650 drop-off sites statewide where residents and businesses can bring unwanted or leftover paint for recycling.

Most drop-off locations are paint retailers (paint, hardware, and home improvement stores) that have voluntarily joined the program. These sites accept paint during regular business hours and are open to all California residents and businesses.

To find a location near you, use the PaintCare Drop-off Site Locator.
