Requesting a Speed Table

The City of Vallejo has developed the following guidelines that a street segment must meet in order to be considered for the installation of speed tables.

* How to Request a Speed Table

If you feel that your street might qualify for speed tables, complete the speed table petition form with signatures from a minimum of 67% of the addresses on the road segment. Dropoff the petition into the Public Works Department drop box at the front of City Hall or mail to:

City Traffic Engineer

555 Santa Clara Street

Vallejo, CA 94590-5934

* Please note that only one signature per household is allowed on the petition submitted.

Once the City receives the petition with 67% of support, the City will then verify if the following criteria is met:

  • The street is residential in character.
  • The street is not classified as a collector street or higher in the City of Vallejo General Plan Circulation Element.
  • The street does not have more than one through travel lane in each direction.
  • The street is not a cul de sac.
  • The longitudinal grade is less than 8%.
  • The vertical alignment of the street shall have adequate sight distance for all signage and markings.
  • The prima facie speed limit posted or unposted is 25 mph or less.
  • The 85th percentile speed (prevailing speed) of the street segment shall be measured showing speeds being 32 mph or greater.
  • Fire Department and Police Department Traffic Division grant approval.
  • The street is not a primary emergency vehicle route.
  • The street is not a Soltrans transit route.

Granted or Denied

After reviewing the petition and determining if the criteria above is met, the City will send the Petitioner a letter either granting or denying the request for a speed table.

Speed Table Funding

Funding for speed table installations is subject to annual allocations from City Council. At the discretion of Public Works, the City will implement as many installations that meet the criteria as funding allows each year. Please note that the City is working through an extensive backlog of requests.

Speed Table Removal

The City of Vallejo reserves the right to alter or remove speed tables if the speed tables are deemed to interfere with public safety.

What are Speed Tables?

A speed table includes a flat-topped speed hump that is 20-25 feet long, which is typically long enough for the entire wheelbase of a passenger car to rest on top. The large flat area, plus ramps that are more gently sloped than speed cushions and speed humps, give speed tables a higher design speed than speed cushions and speed humps.

They are generally the width (in the direction of travel) and 3 inches high, making them distinct from the shorter "speed bumps" found in many parking lots. The profile of a speed table is rectangular in shape.  They are often tapered as they reach the curb on each end to allow unimpeded drainage.

Vallejo Fire Department has vetted speed tables for use in the City of Vallejo.

Speed Table Example

Advantages and Disadvantages of Speed Tables

Advantages:

  • Effective in reducing speed, though not to the extent of speed cushions and speed humps.
  • Maintenance is easier than speed cushions and speed humps.

Disadvantages:

  • Can cause an increase in traffic noise from vehicles braking and passing over the speed table.
  • Can cause an increase in noise from the contents of truck beds banging around as they pass over the speed table.
