- What is Participatory budgeting?
Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process in which community members recommend to the City Council how to spend a portion of the public budget.
- How can I get involved?
PB is driven by community volunteers and there are many opportunities to get involved. Roles include but are not limited to serving as a: Steering Committee member, Budget Delegate, youth delegates, outreach worker, and as an implementing partner. Community stakeholders may also propose a project, facilitate group discussions and meetings, and a host of other opportunities. Please contact City Staff for current opportunities.
- How old do I need to be to volunteer?
All ages are encouraged to volunteer with Participatory Budgeting.
- What are the voting requirements?
ANYONE that is a current resident of the City of Vallejo, 14 years of age or older can vote in PB. Undocumented immigrants, new residents, the displaced and residents with criminal records are encouraged and eligible to vote.
- If a project proposal is not funded, can I submit a proposal for the same project the following cycle? Yes. All proposals are subject to the vetting process regardless if it was a project that was previously proposed.
- What happens to unused funds?
As designated in the City's charter, the City Council has the authority to roll unused funds to other projects. In the past on a case-by-case basis, contracts with implementing partners have been extended to allow additional time. Implementing partners that have successfully completed projects under budget may have the opportunity to complete similar work not originally identified in the project's scope on a case-by-case basis.
- Who makes sure funded projects are carried out properly?
City staff with support form the Steering Committee oversees the PB process to ensure the process is carried out efficiently and effectively.
