Fire Chief Bio

Chief ArbuthnottChief Arbuthnott joined the City of Vallejo on January 14, 2019.  A native of Los Angeles, Chief Daryl Arbuthnott worked for the City of Los Angeles Fire Department for nearly 37 years where he held several ranks that included Firefighter, Fire Inspector, Fire Captain I & II, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief and Deputy Chief.  Prior to retiring, his last assignment required him to manage and oversee 39 fire stations, the air operations section, oversee 1,117 uniformed members and manage more than 274 square miles.

Chief Arbuthnott’s vast experience includes commanding several nationally recognized large-scale brush fires, high-rise, commercial buildings, swift water rescue emergencies, active shooter incidents and special planned events.  He has established a reputation of cultivating organizational leadership and strategies that extend into training, mentoring, and subordinate development.  He also brings a commitment to civic engagement, professionalism and confidence. 

Chief Arbuthnot is interested in restoring the Vallejo Fire Department’s resources and improving service levels to ensure the Department’s response capabilities match the City’s emergency service demands while using data and metrics to measure operational performance.  Additionally, the Chief has expressed interest in establishing public/private partnerships and educating the public in community preparedness.     

Chief Arbuthnot obtained a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Public Administration from Union Institute & University and a Masters of Business Administration Degree in Risk Management, Business Continuity & Security from Boston University.
