District Elections

The City of Vallejo currently elects its City Council through an “at-large” method. The term refers to a system of elections where the elected officials represent the whole of the jurisdiction.

The term “by-district” refers to a system of elections where the elected officials represent specific geographic districts that, together, make up the entire jurisdiction.

Vallejo City Council will be considering whether to move from “at-large elections” of our councilmembers to “by-district” elections in the City of Vallejo.

“At-large” systems have been subject to legal challenges under the California Voting Rights Act.  In Vallejo, our at-large system has been challenged as discriminatory, thus, the City Council will examine whether transitioning to “by-district” elections is a better approach.
